Why we like MAM PDF Print E-mail

BabyNews loves MAMAs you may or may not have noticed, we have started a BPA watchlist of baby products (initially pertaining to feeding) available to consumers here in South Africa. It was startling to find out that less than 30% of the website users on our own site and on other parenting forums had any idea what BPA is or why it is dangerous.

Therefor we decided to give more advice to our local, South African site users about this potentially dangerous product that seems to be in every house in South Africa.

We have systematically started to contact he importers of the main product lines to find updated lists of what their products are made of, and whether it's BPA free, and shockingly, very few of them had any idea of what was in their products, either referring us to their international head-offices or promising to get back to us on the topic.

Some of the companies have done surprisingly well though, and this is the story of one of them.

And so the other shoe has dropped... The FDA and manufacturers of products containing BPA is in trouble...

The American FDA, which more or less everybody piggybacks for basic standards policies, have had over 20 years to rectify a mistake made when Bisphenol-A was grandfathered in at the point where the Toxic Substances Control Act was passed by the US congress in 1976.

The reason it came in was simply that its been used for 70 years, and so "must be safe" and furthermore, has become a multi-Billion Dollar industry, tat relies on Bisphenol-A as a core substance in the manufacture of clear plastics. Every time there has been a serious challenge to the "Standards" previously set by the FDA through independent studies, The FDA responds through ordering a new study, usually industry sponsored and by labs who has as main clients, Plastics Manufacturers.

Basic Hygiene ... do you have it? PDF Print E-mail

How many times have you heard people snigger at new parents who take extra care to sterilize bottles or go and wash off a pacifier that was dropped to the ground, claiming that they "must be new parents" and that "won't happen for the second baby"?

Myself, being a new parent, hear that all the time. I sterilize everything, and I clean up, I regularly wash my hands, and as much as I can, I try and keep a clean environment around my little 5 week old baby. I see the expression on people's faces when baby gets a bath from filtered water, instead of just the tap, and honestly... I am fed up.

BPA-Update: Can the FDA be Bribed? PDF Print E-mail

You know... this is getting ridiculous. Somebody should fire somebody over at the FDA. Maybe President Obama can help the world by doing this as his first act as President of the United States of Greed.

I have read up on BPA, and study after study after study says we should really be staying away from this ingredient in plastics. But nooo.... The FDA still deems it as safe. do yourself a favour and read my rant about the latest hearings the FDA had on the matter, where opposing scientists were given no more than 3-minutes to state their case.

Everybody was baffled by that one, until earlier this week, when it came to light that FDA's Sub-comitee chairman investigating the BPA issue, co-directs a research centre that just received a $5,000,000 donation from a pro BPA activist. The FDA says there is no conflict of interest... really?!
